The 14th-century book inventory of the altar of Mare de Déu of Sant Cugat del Vallès has a two-volume homiliary “Item lo Carle gros . Item lo Carle ten‹uis›”: COLL I ALENTORN 1962, p. 259; MUNDÓ I MARCET 1982b, p. 19 with n. 42; ALTÉS I AGUILÓ 2010b, p. 77, which refers to the first word of Charlemagne’s Epistola generalis, which was the prefatory letter of the homiliary (inc.: „Karolus Dei fretus auxilio rex Francorum et Langobardorum ac patricius Romanorum ...“): MUNDÓ I MARCET 1982c, p. 84 with n. 10 and p. 94 n. 10; ALTÉS I AGUILÓ 2010b, p. 81 (with the erroneous remark “conegut amb aquest nom pel mot amb què s’hi inicia la carta-prefaci adreçada a Carlemany”); ALTÉS I AGUILÓ 2013, p. 48 sq. This two-volume Homiliary must already have existed in the early 13th century, since the Consuetudines of Sant Cugat del Vallès redacted by the monk Perre Ferrer in 1221/1223 (Barcelona, Arxiu de la Corona d’Aragó, Ms. Sant Cugat 46: Consuetudines S. Cucuphatis), mention often a homiliary in two volumes, “Carolus tenuis” and “Carolus grossus”, used during Winter and Spring in the refectory or for the collations. The smaller one was the Winter part of the Homiliary, whereas the bigger one contained at least the Spring part and the Spring and Summer part of the Sanctorale with the Passions and homilies for the saints’ feasts: ALTÉS I AGUILÓ 2013, p. 46.
