(†) Santa Maria de Ripoll, Ms. 35
179r-183v, Einhart - Vita Karoli
This Ripoll manuscript, seen and described by Pròsper de Bofarull in 1822 and 1823 respectively, but then finally lost in 1835, was written under Abbot Oliba and is the manuscript mentioned in the Ripoll catalogue of 1047 with its first and last texts: “Liber bede cum evangeliis II.”, Catalogus codicum manuscriptorum S. Mariae Rivipullensis a. 1047 (1908), p. 102 no 67 sq.; Catalogus codicum manuscriptorum S. Mariae Rivipullensis a. 1047 (1992), p. 399 l. 8. Benet Ribas i Ribas described it under no 57 as “Expositiones Evangeliorum per Bedam” together with other texts (i. a. a Carmen by abbot Oliba), and also Jaime Villanueva and finally Pròsper de Borafull (“Vida de Caroli Magni, que empieza en seguida de la dedicación de Ripoll, continúa después de la de S.n Cucufate y concluye con unos dísticos de Gerardo”). In this manuscript was also transmitted the Vita S. Nicolai by Johannes Diaconus (see there). The manuscript showed the so-called “Widmungsfassung” (original version dedicated to Charlemagne’s son Louis the Pious with Gerward’s dedication poem addressed to Louis the Pious) and must have been existed before 1018, because Oliba used the dedication verses in his own poem on the counts buried in Ripoll written until that year: NICOLAU I D’OLWER 1915–1920, p. 9 and p. 34 n. 3. According to the early modern descriptions the copy showed in the 17th century only ch. 32 sq. (inc.: “Reni apud Mogontiacum …”) and 18–33 – obviously the remaining folia of the once complete, now disordered medieval copy: VILLANUEVA 1821a, p. 191 and Apéndice XXX, p. 306–308 (“sec. XI”; the text is not mentioned); VILLANUEVA 1821c, p. 36 sq. (“sec.
